What GFAS Accreditation Means—and Why It Matters

In 2016, Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge earned full accreditation from the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS)—the only organization offering a rigorous, international accreditation program exclusively for animal sanctuaries. Since then, we’ve proudly maintained our status as a GFAS-accredited sanctuary. We undergo a comprehensive and demanding renewal process every three years to ensure we meet the highest animal care and safety standards.

Accreditation by GFAS is not a one-time achievement—it’s an ongoing commitment to excellence, ethics, and transparency in animal care. TCWR is one of only 11 GFAS-accredited felid sanctuaries in North America, and this distinction reflects the quality and integrity of everything we do.

Why Accreditation Is Critical

The term “sanctuary” is often misused in a poorly regulated industry. Around the world, thousands of organizations describe themselves as rescues or sanctuaries, but far too many still breed animals, allow dangerous human interactions like cub petting, or provide substandard care. For animal lovers, donors, legislators, and advocates, it can be challenging to determine which facilities truly prioritize the welfare of animals.

That’s where GFAS comes in.

The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries exists to distinguish true sanctuaries from those that exploit animals under the guise of rescue. Their standards—developed with input from veterinarians, sanctuary managers, nonprofit leaders, and animal welfare experts—cover 26 areas of animal-specific and operational care. These standards are reviewed and refined regularly, and facilities must demonstrate full compliance to receive or maintain accreditation.

What It Means to Be GFAS-Accredited

At TCWR, being GFAS-accredited means we never breed, buy, sell, or trade animals. We do not allow cub petting, photo ops, or public contact. We provide a lifelong, safe, and enriching home for animals that were once neglected, abused, or exploited. And we operate with complete transparency and unwavering dedication to ethical practices.

In addition to our daily animal care, our education department furthers the GFAS mission by teaching the public about the mistreatment of big cats and the dangers of the exotic pet trade. When animals are seized by authorities from abusive or illegal situations, accredited sanctuaries like ours are the ones called to provide safe, lifelong care.

Our reputation for excellence has also led to our inclusion in the Wildlife Confiscations Network—a national coalition formed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. TCWR is one of just three sanctuaries in the country invited to join this effort, which ensures that trafficked wildlife arriving at U.S. ports can receive immediate medical attention and sanctuary.

Why It Matters to You

Being GFAS-accredited means something. It’s a seal of trust—for donors, policymakers, and, most importantly, the animals. It tells the world that our animals come first. That we are here for their sake, not for profit or entertainment. That we are a true sanctuary.
