At Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge, autumn brings another change: cooler temperatures often mean more activity from the rescued animals who call the Refuge home. If you have been waiting for the perfect time to plan a trip to Northwest Arkansas, fall offers an unforgettable combination of wildlife, scenery, and the one-of-a-kind charm of Eureka Springs.
Experience Fall Foliage in the Ozark Mountains
Nestled among the rolling hills of the Ozarks just outside Eureka Springs, Turpentine Creek offers beautiful views throughout the year—but fall transforms the landscape.
The drive to the Refuge winds through forested hills that gradually turn into a patchwork of autumn color. Around the property, changing leaves provide a beautiful backdrop as you explore the Discovery Area and learn the stories of the animals during a guided tour.
Eureka Springs is already known as a fall foliage destination, and a visit to TCWR gives you an opportunity to experience those colors while supporting a meaningful mission. In recent years, peak color around the Ozarks has often arrived from late October into early November, although Mother Nature ultimately decides when the show begins.
Whether you are coming for photography, a scenic road trip, a weekend getaway, or simply an excuse to spend a crisp afternoon outdoors, this is one of our favorite seasons at the Refuge.
Cooler Weather Means More Active Cats
The cooler temperatures aren’t only welcome news for our visitors.
They’re a favorite among many of our animal residents, too.
During the hottest days of summer, it is natural for lions, tigers, and other cats to conserve energy and seek shade. As temperatures become more comfortable in the fall, visitors often have opportunities to see more activity throughout the Refuge. In fact, spring and fall are typically some of the most active seasons for the animals in our care.
You might see a tiger investigating enrichment, lions interacting with their habitat mates, or one of our other residents enjoying a sunny afternoon from the perfect spot in their habitat.
As a true sanctuary, however, TCWR never requires animals to be on display for visitors. Our residents always have the choice to move throughout their habitats and retreat to their dens when they wish. That means every visit is a little different—and that is part of what makes experiencing the Refuge so special.
Pumpkins, Leaves, and Fall Enrichment
Fall also gives our Animal Care Team plenty of opportunities to introduce seasonal enrichment.
Pumpkins are a favorite this time of year. Some of our cats may bat them around, chase them, claw them, or investigate their unfamiliar scents and textures. Leaf piles can become another enrichment opportunity, encouraging exploration and play. Our bears may also spend more time foraging as the seasons change.
Enrichment isn’t simply entertainment. Providing animals with novel scents, objects, textures, and experiences encourages natural behaviors and offers important mental and physical stimulation.

September 3–6 — 79th Annual Original Ozark Folk Festival
Celebrate Ozark music and culture with four days of live music, dancing, workshops, local artists, craftspeople, and longtime festival traditions.
September 18–19 — 55th Annual Eureka Springs Classic Car Show & Shine
The longest-running car show in the Ozarks returns with vintage automobiles, classic cars, and plenty of downtown fun.
Fall — Hillberry Music Festival
This multi-day, family-friendly festival combines bluegrass and funk with camping, workshops, children’s activities, art installations, food, and craft vendors.
Fall — Eureka Springs Oktoberfest
Enjoy an autumn afternoon downtown with seasonal tastings from local and regional breweries surrounded by Eureka Springs’ distinctive Ozark charm.
October 24 — Eureka Springs Zombie Crawl
One of Eureka Springs’ quirkiest fall traditions returns with spooky activities throughout the day followed by the Zombie Crawl parade through downtown at 6 p.m. The Nightmare in the Ozarks Film Festival also runs October 21 through the weekend.
Mid-November — Autumn Get Together
Wind down the season with an autumn escape featuring live music, yoga, hiking, biking, and opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.
And don’t forget an event happening right here at the Refuge: Bam Bam Day is November 1, 2026, giving visitors another reason to celebrate fall with us.
