Summer's Story

Species: Bobcat (Lynx rufus)

DOB: July 4, 2021

Sex: Female

Arrival: December 29, 2023

Summer was rescued by an accredited Florida sanctuary as a weak and sick two-week-old bobcat kitten who could not use her front limbs. Upon the Florida team’s initial exam, they discovered that Summer had sustained significant injuries and was battling a virus. Summer’s recovery was challenging at first. She was sick multiple times and suffered from parasitic worms. The Florida facility treated and rehabilitated Summer for a year, hoping to reintroduce her to the wild. However, due to the significant medical care and handling she experienced as an adolescent, the Florida team concluded that Summer would thrive more in captivity than in the wild and offered her lifelong sanctuary.

In early 2023, Turpentine Creek agreed to take 33 wild cats from the Florida sanctuary, accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries. One of those animals was Summer, who now loves the comfort and serenity of her new home at Freedom Field. She enjoys the security of her den, but she can be a bit of a nosey neighbor as she sits in her doorway, peeking her head out to observe what is happening around her habitat. Summer is particular about where she likes to be when out in her habitat, often choosing to lounge on one of her benches or hammocks.
