Philmo’s was privately owned, and the family soon realized they could not care for this wild bobcat. Even though Philmo displayed – and still does – much of his natural instincts, he had become accustomed to people, making the option of rehabilitation unlikely for this bobcat. His owners surrendered him to the Wildlife Waystation, a pseudo-sanctuary in Los Angeles, CA. In 2019, the 43-year-old Wildlife Waystation closed its doors after extensive damage from the Creek Fire in 2017 and significant flooding in 2019. Philmo was rehomed to an accredited sanctuary in Florida, along with two other bobcats and a Savannah Cat. Upon arrival at the Florida facility, this three-year-old bobcat received a complete medical exam where x-rays showed a possible congenital defect or a previous injury due to the early onset of bone disease in his spine. Luckily, Philmo does not seem affected by this abnormality and can carry out daily functions without displaying any pain. Additionally, during the exam, Philmo received preventative vaccinations and was neutered.
In early 2023, Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge (TCWR) agreed to take 33 wild cats from the Florida sanctuary, accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS). One of those animals was Philmo, who has adapted to his new home; however, he is naturally shy and only ventures out during dawn and dusk. Philmo is a solitary bobcat who thrives in his independent lifestyle, often found nestled under rocks or tucked away in nooks within his habitat. He is fond of his wooden bench, the rock-and-branch structure, and the top of his den, where he enjoys relaxing and observing his surroundings. Philmo is known for his feisty nature, making him a challenge for animal care staff during medication time. Despite his spirited demeanor, he occasionally takes leisurely walks around his habitat, keeping a watchful eye on his neighbors. Philmo remains aloof and doesn’t seem to favor any particular individual, preferring to enjoy his solitary routines and the comfort of his chosen resting spots.
