Hutch's Story

Species: African Serval (Leptailurus serval)

DOB: January 1, 2007

Sex: Male

Arrival: December 29, 2023

Hutch was initially rescued by an accredited sanctuary in Florida from Busch Wildlife Sanctuary in 2018. Busch Wildlife Sanctuary was in the process of switching management when the Florida facility received a call for help. This 11-year-old serval was previously owned by the former director of Busch Wildlife Sanctuary; however, with new management, Hutch needed a new home. While we know little about Hutch’s previous life, we believe he was purchased from a backyard breeder known to sell caracals, jungle cats, servals, and other wild cats at the time.

In early 2023, Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge (TCWR) agreed to take 33 wild cats from the Florida sanctuary, accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS). Hutch was one of those animals. The social serval has adjusted remarkably well to his new home, quickly becoming known for his highly vocal nature. He loves getting attention from his keepers, often calling out to them with loud, enthusiastic meows. Hutch enjoys relaxing on his comfortable Cool-aroo bed, soaking up the sun and taking in his surroundings. When he’s not lounging, he enjoys exploring his expansive, grassy habitat, delighting in the freedom and space it offers.
