Ginger's Story

Species: African Serval (Leptailurus serval)

DOB: January 1, 2009

Sex: Female

Arrival: December 29, 2023

In 2013, an accredited Florida sanctuary rescued Ginger from a private owner in Kansas at just four years of age. The owner bottle-raised Ginger as a kitten and kept her in a 9’x12′ cage near two cougars and another serval, who unfortunately passed before the rescue. The sanctuary humanely netted Ginger during the rescue and performed a routine veterinary exam with Kansas City Zoo’s onsite veterinarian.

In early 2023, Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge (TCWR) agreed to take 33 wild cats from the Florida sanctuary accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS). Ginger was one of those cats and now calls TCWR her forever home. She has a spirited personality, especially when waiting for her food and when new people approach her habitat. Ginger likes to interact with her feline neighbors. However, she is known to express herself through hissing at the Animal Care Staff. She resides at Freedom Field with the other animals from the Florida sanctuary and enjoys her new surroundings.
