The newest session of Congress (116th) started on January 3, 2019. On February 26, 2019, Representative Mike Quigley (D-IL-5) introduced the bill to the House of Representatives along with 77 co-sponsors. The bill was assigned the number H.R. 1380. The bill was introduced to the Senate on September 26, 2019 and assigned the number S. 2561.
What does this mean?
Although the Big Cat Public Safety Act has been reintroduced to the House of Representatives and has been assigned to the Natural Resources committee and the Waters, Oceans, and Wildlife Subcommittee. The bill was voted in in Subcommittee and approved to be presented on the House Floor (21-14). Soon, the bill will be presented to the House for a vote. The bill was only recently re-introduced to the Senate so it needs to be assigned to a subcommittee, go through a mark-up, then presented to the Senate floor to be voted on. The bill has to pass through the House, Senate, and be signed by the President before it becomes a law.
Should I still contact my Senator even though the bill hasn’t been submitted to a sub-committee?
YES! The more support that is shown to Congress the more likely it will be passed. If we can get a strong showing of co-sponsors immediately it will be more likely to get through the subcommittee. And once the bill reaches the floor the co-sponsors will be able to help get the bill passed.
When does the 116th session end?
The 116th session of Congress runs from January 3, 2019, to January 3, 2021. This means we have plenty of time to raise awareness about the plight of big cats in captivity.
