Nirvana's Story

In May 2025, Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge (TCWR) partnered with Humane World Canada, Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, and The Wildcat Sanctuary to rescue seven African lions from a closed roadside facility in Quebec. This was TCWR’s first international rescue.

After the cubs were born at the Toronto Zoo, TCWR transported six lions back to the Refuge for lifelong care, including Nirvana and her cubs, Reggie and Archie.

Nirvana is a young and resilient first-time mother. She immediately embraced her cubs, guiding them with care as she explored her new surroundings with curiosity and confidence. Her calm strength throughout the rescue and relocation speaks to her remarkable nature. Watching her teach, play, and nurture her cubs is a daily inspiration to the TCWR team.

She has settled easily into sanctuary life, remaining relaxed under the attention of nearby big cat neighbors. Nirvana is extremely vocal with her caregivers—softly humming in contentment, giving gentle “puffs” in greeting, and rubbing along the fence during interactions. She is full of energy, often romping through her habitat and engaging enthusiastically with Reggie and Archie.
