Cyrus Lion's Story

For more than 18 months, Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge worked alongside the Honduran government, international regulatory agencies, veterinary professionals, and an accredited sanctuary partner to create a path to permanent sanctuary for captive-born lions living in Honduras. The historic relocation required extensive planning, international cooperation, and full compliance with CITES and wildlife transport regulations. Together, these efforts made it possible for the lions to begin new lives in accredited sanctuaries in the United States, where they would receive the specialized care they deserve for the rest of their lives.

Cyrus’s journey began in a circus, where he spent years in captivity. After losing his sister, Khalila, his health continued to decline. He remained underweight despite regular feeding, and caregivers suspected an underlying pancreatic condition. With limited access to advanced veterinary care, meeting his complex medical needs became increasingly difficult.

Today, Cyrus has the opportunity to simply be a lion. His expansive habitat allows him to roam, explore, choose where he spends his time, and communicate with neighboring lions through their signature “caroling.” Rotating enrichment encourages his natural instincts, while a species-appropriate diet, nutritional supplements, comprehensive veterinary care, and ongoing health monitoring help support his long-term well-being. Every day, Cyrus is surrounded by a team dedicated to giving him the lifetime of compassionate care he always deserved.
