Max's Story

Species: Bobcat (Lynx rufus)

DOB: September 1, 2010

Sex: Male

Arrival: November 30, 2023

Max was purchased from a backyard breeder and kept as a pet in Rhode Island despite state laws prohibiting bobcat ownership. A local veterinarian assisted in seizing Max from his previous owners, leading to a lengthy legal battle. In May 2011, the state of Rhode Island prevailed and granted ownership of Max to an accredited facility in Florida. During the legal proceedings, Max had already been residing at the Florida facility, where the staff introduced him to his companion, MaryAnn, who had been rescued separately.

In early 2023, Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge (TCWR) agreed to take 33 wild cats from the Florida sanctuary, accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS). One of those animals was Max. Sharing his habitat with MaryAnn, Max is a very active bobcat who loves enrichment and greeting his keepers. He prefers his habitat’s higher, elevated areas to watch his neighbors or investigate the Animal Care Team as they work. Sometimes, you can find Max and MaryAnn strolling around the habitat together or cuddling up on their hammock platforms.
